Yesterday a student of mine, a secondyear who had an almost fatal skiing accident during the Christmas holidays, came back to school. I hadn't expected him to come back so soon - he's suffered severe internal injuries, and if he hadn't worn a helmet he'd have been killed. As it was, there were some serious head injuries as well. So, I didn't think he'd be back within the next 6 months. But, he is back.
The headmaster did some kind of welcome ceremony for him - he ordered all the students to the Assembly Hall and told them the boy was back, and he was greeted with a thundering applause. I was almost in tears as the boy got up, beaming and saying he was happy to be back in school. Luckily none of the students saw me, they were all looking at him. ;)
I keep thinking it's a miracle - not only did he survive, but was able to get back to school within six weeks, AND apparently he won't be suffering any permanent damage in consequence of his accident. If there hasn't been a guardian angel hard at work I don't know.
